K...Oh Samui suppose to jump off this thing?

July 23, 2018

Our next couple days were to be spent relaxing on the beaches of Koh Samui (Su-my). Unfortunately, our morning flight was canceled so we lost an entire day here. To make matters worse, we ended up missing one of the last ferry’s and were worried we wouldn’t even make it to the island that first night. We got lucky and they fit us on the 10pm local ferry, but we didn’t make it to the hotel until after midnight and losing an entire day to travel can be pretty stressful.

However, when we woke up the next morning and went to grab breakfast right on the beach, we were pretty excited to have even a little bit of time here.

We spent our first full day here on a boat out to the Ang Thong National Park. The boat ride began with a trip to Koh Woa, where we stopped for snorkeling. We saw several types of fish, sea cucumbers, and urchins. Before we took off again, we were allowed to jump from the boat into the water. In so doing, Chuck may have ruptured his eardrum.

While the fish weren’t as plentiful as Hawaii, we were really excited to see so much more coral here. There was definitely a lot more colorful and moving coral. One really neat thing we both noticed while we under water was that we could actually hear the fish eating off the rocks! It makes sense now, but in the moment it was mind blowing for us.

After a bit more cruising we got to kayak toward a few other islands and go in between and under some of the rock formations. It was a really fun way to get up close to the caves. We swam for a bit on the white sand beaches and while beautiful, it was also sad to see how many plastic bottles had floated to the shores or were floating by.

We then made it to the National Park and walked up the stairs, which were like ladders at parts, to the Emerald Lagoon. Apparently this lagoon was made famous from The Beach movie, which neither of us had ever seen, but was discussed by the guides often. The lagoon was stunning and is made from saltwater coming in through holes in the surrounding limestone.

It was very relaxing ride back to harbor.

We were lucky to see the sunset from the boat and this day more than made up for yesterday’s headache.

The next morning, we hung out at the beach off our hotel, Lamai Beach, and enjoyed the water before heading back to the ferry.
