Coffee, Food, &...Coffee
April 20th, 2016
The next morning, we grabbed breakfast at Blue Fox Café, another recommendation from our host. Breakfast was fine, but nothing mind-blowing. We realized how lucky we are in Chicago to have so many food options. We explored Victoria a bit more, checking out Munro’s Bookstore. The store sits in an old bank building and is owned by Alice Munro and her husband. We enjoyed seeing the different Canadian book categories and awards that do not exist in the U.S. We walked through Victoria’s Chinatown, the oldest in Canada and second-oldest in North America, after San Francisco.
Next, we found a local coffee shop, Fernwood. We ordered a cold brew, which turned out to be canned and was slightly carbonated. It was an interesting taste, that grew on us throughout sipping, but we could definitely go without. Next door was an ice cream shop, Cold Comfort, which has unique flavors and items. We grabbed a couple ice cream sandwiches made with macaroons and scoops and enjoyed them with our coffees sitting outside.
After another very scenic ferry ride back to Vancouver, we settled in and began our research on our next meal! We decided to head to the Gastown neighborhood for dinner and drinks. The neighborhood was very cozy, with cobblestone streets and charming lighting.
We had dinner at Tuc Craft Kitchen which is a “New Canadian Restaurant.” We were intrigued to find out what exactly this was and it turned out to be locally sourced foods. We enjoyed some mussels, clams and crispy pork belly with cocktails before ordering our meals. All of our food was incredible and incredibly fresh. We then headed to Salt, where we ordered a cheese and meat plate, and had the waitress create a wine flight to match for each of us. We decided this is a restaurant genre we need in Chicago.
